MOVEMENT FOR SMALL SCALE DETENTION
Prisons cause problems. But problems can be solved. RESCALED advocates for detaining offenders in Detention Houses instead of prisons.
Detention Houses are integrated in the community and differ in security levels and programming. They enable more effective and humane punishment and contribute to safer and more inclusive communities.
Small scale enables tailor-made reintegration pathways, allows for a more personal approach, less bureaucracy, better dynamic security and provides more opportunities for prisoners to take responsibility and to interact with the community.
Differentiation means that prisoners are placed in the right security level and offered the most suitable programs. This has proven to work best in terms of facilitating their reintegration and rehabilitation and to be cost effective.
Community integration implies a two-way interaction between the detention house and the community: prisoners can make use of the services in society and each detention house has an added value for the local neighbourhood.
RESCALED is a European network organization and is currently active in five countries: Belgium, France, Norway, the Netherlands and Portugal. In each country, partner organizations are working to spread the RESCALED message. Their efforts are coordinated by national coordinators in the five countries and two European coordinators who are based in Belgium.
